Sport and leisure
The local football team, AFC Telford United, plays in Wellington and for many years, from its formation in the late 1870's until 1969, was known as Wellington Town. At that time the name was changed to Telford United to acknowledge the arrival of the New Town within whose boundaries Wellington falls. In 2004 following financial difficulties experienced by the Club’s owner, the Club was reborn as AFC Telford United.
The old Buck's Head Ground, where the team plays, has been transformed in recent years into a modern, well-equipped stadium. There is a Leisure Complex incorporating a swimming pool, bars, fitness and conference centres and a hotel. The new complex will generate further interest in the Club, in football and the Wellington area in general.
Wellington and the surrounding areas of Telford are well served with other facilities. Wellington has a relatively new Leisure Centre with swimming pool and fitness suite where several other leisure activities are also catered for. On the Bowring Park there are tennis courts (both grass and hard court) available alongside two bowling greens, children's play area and cricket and football pitches. The town is also served by several golf clubs.
Wellington Cricket Club has probably the best private club facilities in the County with two grounds. The club provides coaching from an early age and competes in Junior Leagues at all age group levels. This very successful club has a wonderful clubhouse which is open throughout the cricket season.
The Wrekin Hill overlooks the cricket ground and provides wonderful wooded walks and for the more active the challenge of the Wrekin Hill with a summit of over 1300 feet
