Tourism

Wellington is situated within only a few miles of a whole host of wonderful attractions.  For those energetic enough to complete the walk to the summit at 1300 feet, the Wrekin Hill and surrounding Ercall Woods offer walkers and climbers the very best in dramatic scenery and superb views of the Shropshire countryside.

The World Heritage site of lronbridge Gorge is a major attraction with several museums reflecting its place as the birthplace of industry during the industrial revolution.  One such museum at Blists Hill can provide the visitor with both the experience and the atmosphere of the way of life in a Victorian working community.  Attractions include a 19th century pithead, gigantic steam engines, a squatters cottage, many Victorian shops, a schoolhouse and a bank.

Cosford Aerospace Museum and Acton Scott Historic Working Farm are two major attractions within a short drive of Wellington.
Within a 30 minute drive the visitor can experience the splendour of South Shropshire with its towns of Ludlow, Bridgnorth and the mediaeval town of Shrewsbury and their diverse attractions.

The National Trust has several properties close to Wellington with Attingham Park near Shrewsbury being the largest.  Benthall Hall near Broseley is another and Wellington now its very own 5 acre National Trust property at Sunnycroft reflecting a period town house, almost unchanged since the last century.
Wrekin College in Wellington produces an annual National Theatre Production and the Belfrey Theatre in Wellington stages periodic productions with its amateur group.  The nearby Oakengates Theatre also features regular professional productions with top line entertainers regularly on view.

The Severn Valley Railway is open every weekend throughout the year and every day throughout the spring and summer months.  With steam hauled trains leaving from Bridgnorth this is a truly spectacular way of seeing the beauty of the River Severn in comfort.

If sport is an interest, Wellington Cricket Club host occasional high profile games including an annual Minor Counties fixture at their ground.  Telford Athletics Club compete in the National League from their own stadium in Oakengates and with National coach John Trower and ex international javelin thrower David Ottley both based at Telford and Wrekin Council there is always top class coaching on hand.  Ex Yorkshire batsman Kevin Sharp is the Shropshire Cricket Development Officer based in Telford and the Football Club have recently brought in the experienced Jake King as their manager.

Telford Lions Club stage an annual Lions Day on Wheels spectacular at the Bowring Park in July each year featuring vintage vehicles and a Carnival takes place in August.  With these main attractions and much more to see it's hardly surprising that Wellington still continues to be such a popular market town.

A very good site for accomodation locally is Visit Ironbridge.
