At the end of the first lock down and following Government guidance on re-opening High Streets, the Town Council working with Telford & Wrekin Council installed a new one way system on Church Street to try and reduce the flows of Traffic into Market Street. The tight corner at the junction of Church Street, The Square and Market Street has been notoriously tricky for many years with several vehicles colliding with buildings and many near misses with pedestrians walking in the road due to narrow footpaths. The Council have previously made proposals to address this, including pedestrianisation, which met with resistance from local traders. The need to maintain social distancing during the pandemic required that the Council urgently took steps to try and enhance people’s safety and enable businesses to reopen. Taking on board the views of businesses temporary pedestrianisation as implemented elsewhere across the Country was not an option and therefore the current scheme was designed as an alternative with additional disable parking created on Station Approach right in the heart of the Town Centre.
The scheme has attracted some comment with many recognising that many motorists are unacceptably choosing to ignore the current temporary arrangements when travelling from Church / Market Street. Many residents have also expressed their support for the measures.
These temporary measures are continually under review, but for now, the current restrictions will remain in place with the following modifications:
- Extra signage at Junction Church Street/Vineyard Road
- Additional signage advising Businesses Open as Usual and of Free Car Parking
- Better access for pedestrians crossing at Church Street
- Additional signage warning of pedestrians in the road on Market Street
- Better Access for Cyclists entering down Church Street
- Working with the local Policing Team to enforce.
We are also working with Telford & Wrekin to review traffic flows through the Town Centre including Church Street, Market Street, Traders Parking in Rowlands Gate and congestion at the junction between Haygate Road and Bridge Road and to implement a regeneration scheme in Market Street.
We hope to be out consulting with traders and residents on future plans in the coming months. You can also continue to report defects in road surfaces and footpaths across Wellington on the following web page https://www.telford.gov.uk/info/20249/report_it
