Parking plan to increase turnover of short stay spaces in Wellington

Parking machines that will issue free tickets are to be installed at four car parks in Wellington with the aim of increasing the turnover of spaces so that short stay parking is managed more effectively.

The initiative to install the ten machines has come about as a result of a partnership between Telford & Wrekin Council, Wellington Town Council, market traders and the Chamber of Commerce.

It is happening to try and stop short stay parking being abused by motorists that leave their cars in spaces for a significant period of time.

The Borough Council is committed to NOT introducing charging for parking but has found the current short stay arrangements difficult to enforce.

The option of installing parking machines that issue free tickets with a specific expiry time has been agreed as the best solution to make it easier to manage the short stay parking.

The car parks that will have machines installed are the Civic & Leisure Centre Car Park (known as Swimming Pool West), Nailor’s Row, Walker Street (known as Swimming Pool East) and Victoria Road North.

The Town Mayor, Cllr Phil Morris-Jones said that “I welcome the arrival of these parking machines, which will help to make the most maximum and efficient use of our car parks for visitors to our Town. I would emphasise that there is NO intention to start charging for their use. Wellington will still remain a FREE car parking Town”.

Free Parking Ticket machines are being introduced to:

  • Stop people abusing short stay car parking
  • Car parking remains free and is benefitting the economy of the Town Centre
  • Solves the problem of cars staying in spaces for more than the allowed three hours
  • Increased turnover of spaces means more shoppers so economy of Wellington boosted
  • The decision is the result of a partnership working between Wellington Town Council, Telford and Wrekin Council and Town Centre Traders.
