Shelves are being dusted off, window displays put together and shutters lifted as measures are put in place to welcome shoppers back as Wellington prepares to re-open for business.
A range of measures aimed at getting the town’s economy moving and keeping people safe have been worked through with Telford and Wrekin Council, Wellington Town Council and Love Wellington consulting with traders in the town.
Cllr Lee Carter, who represents Wellington and is Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood, Commercial Services & Regeneration said: “The work that has gone on during the past week has been an excellent example of partnership working to ensure shops and businesses will be able to operate safely in these challenging times.”
Measures introduced in Wellington include
- Installation of Social Distancing makings and signs
- Trial closure of Walker Street
- Suspension of some parking bays on Market Street
- Trial one way system along Church Street with a contra flow pop up cycle lane
Love Wellington, which is supporting and promoting the town, has held a virtual meeting with traders and representatives of the Highways and Public Protection departments of the council. “We are arranging many initiatives to boost the town – including a floral competition, ‘welcome back’ banners and a ‘Lets Shop Local’ campaign. We want to get the town buzzing again soon, whilst always staying safe.”
Councillor Carter added: “We know that we might not get everything right first time and have committed to keeping everything under review. Indeed we had an example of the barriers not being in quite the right place in Market Street outside Ken Francis butchers and this was able to be remedied within 20 mins of being alerted to it yesterday.”
