On a beautiful sunny day at the end of the July, Mayor and Mayoress Anthony and Julie Lowe joined Sally Themans of Love Wellington to judge the first ‘Wellington in Bloom’ entries.
Green fingered residents of Wellington had been encouraged to enter the competition which is believed to be the first for some time, and Wellington Town Council agreed to donate the prize money and rosettes., Park Gardens
Organised by Sally Themans of Love Wellington, the competition saw entries for Best Hanging Basket, Best Childrens Planter and Best Front Garden from all over the town.
“The competition was launched in the middle of the Covid lockdown to try to cheer people up all around the town – especially as so many people were taking great comfort in their gardens during the spell of good weather. I thought it was a great way to lift spirits, brighten up the town and recognise people’s efforts. Due to Covid we couldn’t go into back gardens – so it was all about what we could see at a safe distance.”
Whilst the hanging baskets and planting around the centre of Wellington look fabulous – this was a way to recognise the efforts of residents town wide.
Mayor and Mayoress Anthony and Julie Lowe conducted the judging yesterday and presented the thrilled winners with their prizes and certificates yesterday, and all entries were awarded a green rosette.
The winners were :
Front Garden – Kieran West, Haygate Road
Hanging Baskets – Helen King, Cherry Tree Close
Best Children’s Planter – Flora Pascal
And a special Mayors Award to the Taylor family from Combermere Drive for their ‘lock down vegetable front garden’.
The Mayor said ‘I was so impressed by the amount of work devoted to both front gardens and hanging baskets and by how much pleasure their efforts reward them with. Our thanks to all who took part’
